The first and most important thing that you need to learn is value. If you want to learn how to become an antique picker this is very important. If you do not know what something is worth when you buy it, how the heck can you know if you are getting a good deal or not.

A good place to start is at your local antique shops. Pick a few places close to where you live and browse. You will get a good idea what things sell for and what is hot.

Get to know the shop owner, you can pick his or her brain for whats selling right now. After you leave jot down some notes on what you saw, prices and such... We are just getting a feel for things right now.

After you get an idea on whats hot, drive colse to your local area and keep on the look out for old houses or barns that might have items you are on the hunt for. This is just one way to find antiques.

Antiquing or junking as it is also known can be hard work but is also lots of fun. Other places to find items to buy are at household auctions,storage auctions, stable sales and the internet.

Try to specialize in distinct items and certainly learn about them, you will become an expert in no time.

After you buy a few items go back to your local antique shops and see if they might be curious in your new finds. If they are not, you can sell them on eBay or other online auctions.

There are many other pieces of the puzzle for antique pickers to learn, this is just the start. Read all you can about antiques and collecting and you will have a good start.

This is a very OLD & LARGE antique, chest or trunk, I believe is made of oak and is cedar lined. It has a yale lock but the skeleton key is missing. All other hardware appears to be there and original. The inside is deep and wide, with plenty of room for storage measuring 48 long x 17 high 20 wide inches. The chest is not extremely heavy due to its fine construction and thin walls. This must have been designed to be a decorative piece and was not intended to carry heavy luggage. You will not come across this every day. In fact it was purchased in the mids 70s at a yard sale. No maker mark could be found. Please note the photos were taken without it being cleaned and should shin up well. PLEASE NOTE, due to the size and weight, I am not sure of the costs to ship this item, local pickup is preferred. Although, I am more than willing to drop the chest off at the local UPS store listed below, you will have to pay packaging and shipping fees, cost unknown and will not be included in the sales price of the chest. I am the Assistant to the Mayor in my city. It is a great job with phenomenal perks. I get to work with some of the best population I could ever wish to know. My city has a population of about 35,000 so there is some size to it, yet it retains a very friendly, small town feel. Our city has also just had it's bi-centennial celebration, and upon that chance I was given a very special task. I was to find a very special award that our Mayor's office would present to our dedicated Fire Department.

With a very workable budget, I set out online to find ideas. I came over the advertisement for Antique Fire Trucks for sale. The link took me to  a great site where I found an impressive list of trucks on auction. Space was at a excellent on the grounds of the fire station, so I knew it couldn't be one of the more modern trucks; they are much larger. There was a beautiful old truck with wooden wheels from the early 20's though, and it was quite small. It had such character and charm. Still intelligent red, it projected the feelings of hope felt by all who were rescued by the men it once carried into action. You could just see the smiling faces of children whose cats were brought down out of trees by the selfless community servants that rode this truck in it's day. Though not nearly as much of a force to be reckoned with as today's fire truck, it captured all of what firefighters and a fire division are. It was perfect.

We had a parade planned for the bi-centennial. The Mayor recommend that at the end of the parade route, we should pull the Fire Chief to the stage and make a speech about our phenomenal and appreciated fire department. Then we would pull the truck on a float at the end of the procession and time it so that he would be taking the microphone right as it approached. All things went to plan and as the truck float made it's way toward the stage, the Mayor put his hand on the back of the Fire Chief and just waited for him to comprehend what he was looking at. Then he took the mic back and presented the truck to the division to the applause and tears of our city's residents.

The History of Christmas Ornaments

In A.D. 336, an early Roman calendar first mentions December 25 as the date of Jesus' birth. This date was likely influenced by the year-end pagan festivals to celebrate the harvest. Celebrations included specially ready meals, decorating of homes, gift-giving and singing. Gradually, pagan traditions became a part of the Christian celebrations. Most Christmas traditions such as the Christmas tree and ornaments came from central Europe. The earliest German Christmas trees were decorated with food; apples, onions, pears, nuts, candies, and fruits were placed on a tree.

In the 1800s, glass ornaments were first made in the Lauscha, Germany. This cottage manufactures complicated the entire family. Generally, men did the glassblowing, women did the silvering and the children helped to paint and discontinue them. These beautiful new glass ornaments began to replace edible decorations.

In the 1840s, Europeans immigrating to North America brought with them their Christmas traditions. Prior to that time, Christmas was not widely paramount in North America. As community became more prosperous, ornaments became larger in size and the colors come to be more vibrant to reflect the new wealth.

F.W. Woolworth was the first North American retailer to sell glass ornaments. The story goes that he was not too sure about this new product line. However, Woolworth changed his mind by 1890 when he was selling million worth of ornaments in his five-and-dime stores.

Until 1925, virtually all hand blown glass ornaments were manufactured in Lauscha, Germany. By 1935, more then 250 million Christmas ornaments were being imported to the United States. After Wwii, the Lauscha area became a part of East Germany. Many glassblowers fled to West Germany and the manufactures declined. Around this time, Japan and Czechoslovakia began producing ornaments for the North American market

In the 1960's, glass ornaments went out of fashion when the aluminum tree adorned with ornaments of similar shape and color became the rage. Many traditional ornaments were thrown away during this period.

What to Look for in Antique Ornaments

If you're lucky sufficient to still have any vintage ornaments, hang on to them.

How to tell vintage versus new. Earlier ornaments were smaller than today's modern ornaments. They were ordinarily done in soft colors with hand painted details. You'll observation that the paint may be faded or distressed in areas on vintage ornaments.

Hand blown versus engine made. Remove the stem from the base of the ornament. Ornaments that are hand blown will have an uneven base because the glass blower cannot make a clean break. modern engine made ornaments will have a flat even base.

Where to find vintage ornaments. Ebay, flea markets, church sales and garage sales are all good hunting grounds for vintage ornaments.
